扬州东关街区古民居建筑文化空间存在三重结构，依次为界内文化空间、诗性文化空间和审美文化空间，是明清至民初因盐业盛衰而活跃于此的一批徽商、文人雅士、官僚和普通民众的社会生活影像，也是了解那个时代扬州区域社会文化形态、价值观念和各种装饰艺术符号意义的关键性纬度，和扬州现当代地域建筑文化空间巨大的本土背景之一。

The?cultural?space?of?ancient?residential?buildings?in??Dongguan?Street, is formed in three perspectives, that is the architectural space, the poetic space?and?the aesthetic?space. The space presents the image of the social life of Huizhou merchants, the refined?scholars,?the bureaucrats, and?ordinary?people?who lived here duo to the prospects and decline of salt industry during?Ming and?Qing?dynasty?until?early?Republic?of?China. As one of the local background of the modern and contemporary regional architecture, the cultural space in Dongguan Street of Yangzhou contributes to our study of the social pattern, the view of values, the symbolic meaning of various decorative arts in Yangzhou area at that time.
