Abstract:
As a public transport vehicle, the metro plays a vital role in our daily life. With the development of the metro construction, more and more artworks are set in to decorate the underground space, so as to make the metro a perfect platform to show the history and culture of the city., As a world-famous city for its long history and rich cultural recourses, Xi’an is located in Guanzhong plain which bears distinctive cultural features of this region. As for the metro construction, Xi’an is the tenth city to open the metro system and most of its metro lines are still under construction. In contrast, Hong Kong is located as a center of global finance in the coast of the south sea of China. It has been colonized for more than 100 years by UK. And so its colonial history forms a blend of Chinese and Western culture. The metro construction of Hong Kong, 30 years earlier than Xi’an’s, is more comprehensive and mature. The comparative study shows there are many differences in the creation of metro public art creation between Xi’an and Hong Kong. From the aspects of subject, content and design ideas, the paper classifies the metro art works in both cities into three categories, namely, the historical development, the cultural tradition and the geographical features. With the appreciation of individual cases and the overall comparison of the form, the material and the set position of these art works, the paper aims to provide references for the design of the metro public arts in Xi’an.
