Firstly, this paper focuses on the problems to discuss the gains and losses in the process of old city reconstruction during urbanization. From the perspective of the street spatial form of Xi'an ancient city, it analyzes the street space about the figure-ground relation, the value of flexible space, the significance of the descending subspace in parent space, and the vitality of the internal corner space inside the block. The paper comes to the conclusion that to meet the daily demands of the public it is advisable to reconstruct the public living place rather than the geometrized material space. Only if the old city reconstruction is considered in the aspects of economy, society and environment, can the “people-oriented” urban survival right be reflected in urban space.
