In the pre-Qin period, house building was only a living quarters, which had almost no cultural meaning except to intuitively show the social status and economic strength of residents. With the development of social economy and culture since the Qin and Han dynasties, people began to assign cultural connotations to residential buildings, including customs, institutional norms, ways of thinking, values, and aesthetic tastes and other factors. The more and more frequent contact between the great Han Empire and the ethnic groups in the border areas helps the house building culture originally belonged to the Han Dynasty to spread to the outside world. On the one hand, these nationalities take the initiative to learn from the Central Plains because they yearned for its architectural culture. On the other hand, they started to passively adopt its architecture form due to the practicality of the house building culture of the Central Plains. In the history of these ethnic groups written in the Central Plains, the architectural culture of houses can also be used as a standard to judge the degree of civilization development.
