It is generally acknowledged by domestic academic circles that Nagai Kafu's literature is extremely aesthetic and reflects his passive and reclusive world outlook and the life indulging in decadent enjoyment. But this paper holds that behind its aesthetic appearance remain his critiques of Japanese society and his participation in the modern construction of Japanese civilization. Analyzing the Edo cultural elements such as Geisha, Edo art and Edo relics in Nagai Kafu's works, this paper points out that his Edo serves as not only a symbol of Japanese traditional culture opposite to the modern civilization, but also a medium for him to rebel against Japanese authority. With the intensification of speech control in Japan, Nagai Kafu continuously weakens his rebellious stance in his creation, hence Edo is highlighted as a symbol of traditional civilization. Nevertheless, Edo, a theme or material, still runs through the whole of Nagai Kafu's literature as a metaphor of rebellion. His literature is not one without realistic criticism.
