In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, Chinese people were in a complex context where multiple ethnic groups interacted and mingled. The populace had different ethnic concepts in different social fields and adapted themselves to the social trend in the name of the state. Li Jieren's “the River Novel Trilogy” accurately reproduces the vicissitude of people's ethnic concept in Sichuan province. Firstly, people in Sichuan judge the West from the established perspective of ethnic partition which leads to the inferences of religion and culture. In addition to the ethnic identification with the Japanese of “the same language and race” they take Japan as an example and intermediary to carry out the reform. At the same time, when ethnic division within Chinese nation emerges the Han people began to exclude the Manchu people through the revolution, while the Manchu people made ethnic identity with the Han by evoking, strengthening and reconstructing historical memories. Under the influence of Bashu culture, the change of Sichuan people's ethnic concept is emotional and superficial, hence the phenomenon of embarrassment and dilemma where the ethnic concept and the national prospect pursuit appear harmonious seemingly but various actually.
