Employing Michel de Certeau's theory on the practice of everyday life as the interpretive tool, the present study addresses urban writing in The Dangling Man by Saul Bellow on a basis of a close reading of the sample text. Probing into Joseph's walking practice in both the private space represented by his room and the public space represented by the city streets, the paper aims to delve into the metaphorical implication of the walking practice and analyze the American Jews' practice of everyday life in modern cities in hopes to examine the cultural significance in such a practice.
